Caxton Gibbet

Caxton Gibbet

You did not hang by the neck
at Caxton Gibbet.
You’d be stuck in a cage
at the cross road
for the crowd to poke
at your powerless rage,
Until you turned the page.

“Ladies and gentlemen place your bet.
How long before the gibbet
Takes the life of this bandit?”

You did not hang by the neck
at Caxton Gibbet.
A slow death from thirst
or starvation
the determination
of your fate
at the crossroad of destiny.

The misplaced pity
of the baker
who fed a murderer,
without debate
led him to share the cage
of the Caxton Gibbet.
